🏛 Who We Are

The Amesbury Tenants Union is a city-wide organization, uniting renters across neighborhoods to build collective power and protect tenant rights. This means we support tenants throughout Amesbury—regardless of building or landlord—through advocacy, education, and direct action.

The Amesbury Tenant Union was built because no one else was coming to save us.

We organize tenants to defend our homes, protect our neighbors, and stand together against landlord abuse, unsafe living conditions, and housing injustice.

We are currently operating as an unincorporated grassroots tenants union, but we intend to formally incorporate in Massachusetts as a nonprofit organization. This will allow us to expand our efforts, protect our members, and pursue funding to better serve our community.

🔥 Why We Exist

• Landlords often rely on tenants feeling isolated, scared, and uninformed.
• Many tenants face unsafe housing, harassment, illegal evictions, and retaliation — often while struggling financially, medically, or emotionally.
• Government agencies are often under-resourced or unwilling to act quickly enough.
• Legal protections exist — but only collective organizing gives tenants the power to enforce them.

🧱 What We Do

• Build tenant power through organizing, not charity.
• Document landlord violations, illegal behavior, and retaliation.
• Support tenants under attack through legal, financial, and public defense.
• Train members in their legal rights.
• Negotiate with landlords when possible; fight when necessary.
• Build Block Associations to support neighbors locally while feeding strength into the union-wide defense structure.
• Use mutual aid to stabilize members in crisis while legal fights are ongoing.
• Provide safe spaces where no one fights alone.

🤝 Who Can Join

• Any tenant or resident living in Amesbury or surrounding areas.
• Voucher holders, Section 8 tenants, undocumented tenants, families, seniors — everyone is welcome and protected here.
• Organizers, volunteers, and allies who want to help defend tenants are also welcome.

⚔ What Makes Us Different

• We are not a non-profit or social service agency.
• We are tenant-led, action-focused, and collective-defense driven.
• We do not depend on landlords for permission.
• We work with legal aid, but we organize whether the courts move fast or not.
• We expose abusive landlords to public pressure and media attention if needed.
• We document everything — because what happens to one tenant happens to all tenants.
